How the Litmus Test Works 1. Acidic Test: Dip a piece of red litmus paper into the solution. If it remains red, the solution is acidic or neutral. Dip a piece of blue litmus paper. If it turns red, the solution is acidic. 2. Basic Test: Dip a piece of blue litmus paper into the solution. If it remains blue, the solution is basic or neutral. Dip a piece of red litmus paper. If it turns blue, the solution is basic (alkaline). 3. Neutral Test: If neither red nor blue litmus paper changes color, the solution is neutral.
